New specialized labeling regulations for wine and aromatized vine products.
Following the entry into force of (ΕU) 2021/211 regulation, which amends Regulation (EU) No 251/2014 on aromatized wine products, it has become necessary to establish rules concerning the indication and naming of ingredients in wine and aromatized wine products.
The new specific labeling rules applicable to wine and aromatized wine products were adopted by the EU institutions in December 2021 (Regulation (EU) 2021/2117) as part of the reform of the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).
These new labeling measures require wine and aromatized wine products to provide, on a mandatory basis, the list of ingredients and a nutritional declaration, either directly on the label or via digital means.
Regulation (EU) 2021/2117 modernized the EU's policy on consumer information for wine products by allowing producers to present the newly required information through electronic labels (e-labels).
Summary:
- The list of ingredients that cause allergies and intolerances must be indicated on the "physical" label.
- "Electronic" labels may not contain any information intended for sales or marketing purposes.
- No user data may be collected or tracked through electronic means.
The introduction of new mandatory labeling rules will meet consumer expectations and increase transparency, while also enabling tailored communication for wines and aromatized wine products.
By November 2023, all wines and aromatized wine products marketed in the EU, regardless of their origin, must provide the list of ingredients and the full nutritional declaration either on the label or through digital means.

Before making any adjustments, you should consider the following key points:
The data must be published publicly as an electronic label.
The data must be accessible to consumers via a digital link.
The digital link must be scannable through a 2D barcode.
With GS1 standards, we can support industries in complying with the new (legal) requirements for consumer information.
