What is a barcode?

Barcodes or linear barcodes are symbols that can be scanned electronically using laser or image-based technology.GS1 barcodes always include a Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) which is exclusivelly bound a company to uniquely identify all of its trade items anywhere in the world.

Global Trade Item Number / GTIN (EAN / UPC)

GTIN is a universal code that uniquely identifies different items all over the world, giving you an accurate and efficient way to access and share information about your products. Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) is the number you see under a barcode, also known as an EAN or UPC.

GTINs are usually composed of 13 digits, sometimes usually in the USA we come across them with 12 digits. GTINs with 8 digits are used on small items and GTINs with 14 digits are used for cases or cartons. GTINs are used for the identification of products whether they are sold  online or in stores.

In every case all GTINs are attributed by the national associations of GS1 in the world, in order to ensure their uniqueness, whereas their use is permitted by a unique business.

Why are barcodes so important

Barcodes may be the supossition to sell your products but they also facilitate the circulation of products in the supply chain. They are as important as your company's logo, website or even VAT number. Therefore it is imperative that you do everything right!

The uniqueness of GTINs is ensured only when they are issued by national GS1 associations since they are the exclusive source for their management globally. GTINs are issued exclusively for you and provide your customers with valuable information about your products.

GS1 Association Greece is an independent, not-for-profit organisation, member of the global Organisation. It the only legal and authorized carrier in Greece to issue and manage GS1 prefixes 520 and 521.
