Serial Shipping Container Code Structure (SSCC)
The SSCC describes all logistics units, whether homogeneous, composed of similar products, or heterogeneous, composed of combinations of different products.
The company creating the SSCC is responsible for ensuring its uniqueness.
The SSCC is an 18-digit number created based on a GS1 company prefix, which is included in its structure.
What is a Logistics Unit?
A logistics unit is any object composed for transport or storage, crucially managed across the entire supply chain. For example, it could be a carton with 12 skirts and 20 jackets in different sizes and colors, or a pallet holding 40 boxes, each containing 12 paint containers.
SSCC Stucture
Depending on the length of your company's GS1 company prefix, the 18 digits are structured as follows:
GS1 Company Prefix Length | Extension Digit | GS1 Company Prefix | Serial Reference | Check Digit | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
GCP-7 | Ε | ΝΝΝΝΝΝΝ | ΧΧΧΧΧΧΧΧΧ | C | |
GCP-8 | Ε | ΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝ | ΧΧΧΧΧΧΧΧ | C | |
GCP-9 | Ε | ΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝ | ΧΧΧΧΧΧΧ | C | |
GCP-10 | Ε | ΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝ | ΧΧΧΧΧΧ | C | |
GCP-11 | Ε | ΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝ | ΧΧΧΧΧ | C |
Extension Digit: Takes values from 0 to 9 and is assigned by the company itself to increase the number of available SSCC codes.
GS1 Company Prefix: Assigned by GS1 to businesses creating logistics units. Makes the code unique globally without specifying the unit's origin.
Serial Reference: A sequential number following the company prefix, assigned by the company. The simplest way to determine reference numbers is through ascending numbering like 000, 001, 002, 003, etc.
Check Digit: The last digit of the SSCC code, calculated using the known GS1 algorithm based on the preceding digits of the code to confirm correct barcode reading and ensure the code has the correct structure.
A business wanting to identify its different production lines using SSCCs can do so by assigning groups of SSCCs for each production line.
